THE CHALLENGE
The schools in Mapleton, Oregon, play an important role in the local community. But as with many communities in Oregon, changes in the local economy left the rural district struggling to make needed upgrades.
When the State of Oregon made grants available for school improvements through the TAP grant program, Mapleton School District had an opportunity to create a better experience for students — and restore the schools to places of hope and optimism.
THE SOLUTION
With Curt Wilson in the lead, the team supported the school district and the community every step of the way, from planning for a local bond measure until construction was complete. Along the way, Curt and the team:
Brought people together. Through a thoughtful engagement process, the diverse community decided together which improvements the school needed most.
Used space (and budget) creatively. Creative thinking was essential for meeting the community’s priorities while making the most of every dollar. One example: Instead of an expensive expansion, an underused library was transformed into two new middle-school classrooms.
Met people where they were. Curt attended every school board meeting. And thanks to forums held throughout the school district, many people got involved.
THE IMPACT
The community voted to approve the bond measure and invest in improvements to their local schools. By connecting with people, thinking creatively, and putting the community’s priorities first, Curt and the consultant team helped Mapleton’s schools remain a place of community pride.
